Why is my dog holding one paw up? | arlo.® Atlas

Overview

If your dog is holding one paw up, it usually means that paw is uncomfortable or painful. Common causes include a small cut, a thorn or stone stuck between the pads, a sore nail, a mild sprain, or irritation from something they’ve stepped on. A quick check at home can often help you spot an obvious problem, but if the paw is very painful, swollen, bleeding, or your dog won’t bear weight, veterinary advice may be needed.

Things To Check

1. Look at whether your dog is only holding the paw up when standing, walking, or after exercise.

2. Check the paw pads, between the toes, and around the nails for cuts, grit, grass seeds, thorns, or other debris.

3. Compare the affected paw with the others for swelling, redness, heat, or a visible difference in shape.

4. Gently inspect each nail for cracking, splitting, bleeding, or a nail that looks partly lifted.

5. See whether your dog is licking, chewing, or repeatedly biting at the paw, which can point to irritation or pain.

6. Check if the problem started after a walk, garden time, muddy ground, rough play, or trimming the nails.

7. Notice whether your dog still wants to move normally or is reluctant to put any weight on the leg at all.

Common Causes

The most common reasons are minor paw injuries, such as a small cut, a stuck foreign body, or a sore pad from rough ground. Cracked or broken nails are also very common and can be surprisingly painful.

Sometimes it’s due to something less obvious, like a mild sprain, a sore toe, or irritation between the toes from mud, moisture, or debris. In some cases, a paw may be held up because your dog is trying to avoid pressure on a bruise, bite, or deeper injury.

What To Do

If your dog will let you, calmly check the paw in good light and remove any loose dirt or debris you can easily see. Be gentle, as sore paws can make even easy handling feel uncomfortable.

Rinse the paw with clean lukewarm water if it looks dirty, then dry it carefully, especially between the toes. Keep your dog quiet and avoid long walks, running, or rough ground until you know the cause is simple and improving.

If there’s a small superficial issue, monitor it closely over the next day. If the paw is still being held up, or the lameness seems to be getting worse, it’s best to get it checked.

When To Contact A Vet

Contact your vet promptly if the paw is bleeding heavily, visibly swollen, very painful, hot, or your dog won’t put weight on it. You should also seek advice if you can see a deep cut, a broken nail that keeps bleeding, a foreign body you can’t safely remove, or if the problem doesn’t improve within a day.

If your dog seems unwell, the paw issue is worsening, or there’s sudden severe lameness, it’s safer to have them examined sooner rather than later.
