Why does my dog have white specks in its coat?

Read time: 3 minutes

Overview

White specks in your dog’s coat are often just loose skin flakes or bits of dirt, but they can also be caused by lice or other skin and coat issues. You can usually do a few simple checks at home to get a better idea of what you’re seeing, but you can't confirm the cause just by looking in many cases.

Things To Check

1. Part the coat in good light and see whether the specks sit on top of the hair or seem attached to the skin.

2. Check whether the specks brush off easily or keep reappearing soon after grooming.

3. Look for itchiness, scratching, rubbing, biting at the coat or restlessness.

4. Check the skin for redness, scabs, flaking, sore areas or tiny moving insects.

5. Look around the ears, neck, back and tail base, where coat and skin problems often show up first.

6. Notice whether the coat seems dry, dull, greasy or matted, as this can help narrow down the cause.

7. Check bedding and grooming tools for white debris that may be coming from the environment rather than the coat itself.

Common Causes

The most common reason is simple skin flaking, often called dandruff, especially in dogs with dry skin or a coat that needs grooming. Loose hairs, dirt, dried skin, pollen or bedding fibres can also look like white specks.

Lice are another possibility, particularly if the specks seem to cling to the hair and your dog is itchy or uncomfortable. Less commonly, white specks may be linked to other skin conditions that need a closer look, such as irritation, allergies or infection.

What To Do

Gently brush your dog and see whether the specks lift away easily. A fine-toothed comb can help you inspect the coat more closely. Wash bedding, vacuum resting areas and keep up with normal grooming so you can monitor whether the specks are getting better or worse.

If your dog is scratching a lot, losing hair, or the skin looks sore, make a note of what you’re seeing and how long it has been going on. That makes it easier to explain the problem if you need advice later.
