Why does my dog have a musty smell?

Read time: 3 minutes

Overview

A musty smell in dogs is often linked to damp coat, skin oil, ears or a build-up of dirt in the fur. Sometimes it’s just from being wet or needing a wash, but it can also happen with skin irritation, ear issues or other health problems, so it’s worth checking a few basics first.

Things To Check

1. Notice when the smell is strongest. It may be after walks, after rain, after rolling, or when your dog has been sleeping.

2. Look over the coat and skin for redness, greasiness, flakes, scabs, sore spots or a sticky feel.

3. Check the ears for wax, discharge, head shaking or scratching, as ears can sometimes be the source of a musty smell.

4. Smell around the paws, armpits, belly and skin folds, since these areas can hold moisture and odour.

5. Think about any recent washing, swimming or muddy walks. A coat that stays damp can start to smell quite quickly.

6. Check the mouth only if the smell seems to be coming from there, as bad breath can be mistaken for a coat smell.

7. Notice whether your dog is scratching, licking, rubbing or seeming uncomfortable, as that can point to irritation.

Common Causes

The most common cause is a wet or dirty coat, especially in dogs that get muddy, go swimming, or have thicker fur that holds moisture. Natural skin oils can also build up and give a musty, yeasty or stale smell.

Skin irritation, mild dermatitis or an overgrowth of normal skin and ear yeast can also cause a stronger smell. Ear problems are a frequent source too, especially if the smell is coming from one area rather than the whole dog.

Less commonly, the smell may be linked to dental disease, anal gland issues or another health problem. You usually can’t tell for certain just by smell alone.

What To Do

Start by drying your dog well after walks, baths or swimming, especially in the coat, ears and skin folds. Brush out dirt and loose fur regularly, and keep an eye on whether the smell improves after grooming.

If your dog is simply damp or muddy, a sensible wash routine with a dog-safe shampoo may help support coat cleanliness. Make sure any bedding, towels and resting areas are kept clean and dry too, since smells can linger there.

If the smell keeps coming back, make a note of where it seems to come from and whether there are other changes such as itching, head shaking or greasy skin. That information can help you decide whether it’s just grooming-related or something that needs a vet check.
