Why are my dog’s ears itchy and red?

Overview

Red, itchy ears in dogs are often linked to irritation, allergies, wax build-up or an ear infection. Sometimes it’s a simple skin flare-up, but it can also be caused by something trapped in the ear or by scratching that’s made the area sore. You can usually check a few basics at home before deciding what to do next.

Things To Check

1. Check whether the itching started after a walk, grooming, washing, swimming or time in grass.

2. Look for redness, swelling, heat, discharge, crusting, a bad smell or broken skin.

3. See if your dog is shaking their head, rubbing the ear, tilting their head or reacting when the ear is touched.

4. Check both ears, as some causes affect one ear while others are more likely to involve both.

5. Notice whether there’s any extra wax, dirt, grass seeds or visible debris near the ear flap or opening.

6. Think about any recent changes in food, treats, shampoo, bedding, or exposure to pollen, dust or other irritants.

7. Watch for signs the skin around the face, paws or body is also itchy, as that can point towards a wider skin issue.

Common Causes

The most common reasons are irritation, allergies and ear infections. Dogs with skin sensitivity can get red, itchy ears alongside other itchy areas.

Wax build-up or trapped moisture can also make the ears feel uncomfortable, especially if your dog has floppy ears or has been swimming or washed recently.

Less commonly, a foreign body such as a grass seed, mites or another ear problem may be involved. Repeated scratching can also make the skin look red and sore, even if that wasn’t the original cause.

What To Do

Keep note of when the itching happens and whether it’s getting better or worse. This can help you spot patterns linked to walks, grooming or certain environments.

Check the ears gently rather than digging inside them. If you can see dirt or wax near the outer ear, careful routine cleaning may help support comfort, but avoid using cotton buds or anything that could push debris further in.

Try to limit anything that seems to trigger the problem, such as a particular shampoo, muddy conditions, or heavy exposure to pollen. If the ear flap is being scratched, keeping the area clean and dry can help reduce further irritation.

If the redness or itching keeps coming back, or your dog seems uncomfortable, it’s sensible to speak to your vet for proper advice.
