What should I do if my dog has a small bite wound that looks minor?

Read time: 3 minutes

Overview

If your dog has a small bite wound that looks minor, it’s sensible to clean it gently, keep an eye on it, and watch for any change over the next day or two. Even small bite wounds can be more than they first seem, but not every one is an emergency.

The main thing is to check the skin closely, keep the area clean, and notice whether it starts to swell, ooze, feel hot, or become sore. If it stays small and your dog seems comfortable, home monitoring may be enough for now.

Things To Check

1. Check whether the skin is actually broken, even if the mark looks tiny at first glance.

2. Look for swelling, redness, heat, discharge, scabbing or a bad smell around the wound.

3. See whether your dog is licking, chewing, flinching or guarding the area.

4. Check if the wound is near the eye, mouth, neck, chest, belly, joint or paw, where bite wounds can be harder to judge.

5. Notice whether your dog is otherwise bright, eating normally and moving comfortably.

6. Think about what caused it, such as another dog, a cat, wildlife or a sharp tooth graze during play.

7. Watch for any change over the next 24 to 48 hours, because some bite wounds only become obvious later.

Common Causes

The most common cause is a minor puncture, scrape or tear from another animal’s teeth. These can look small on the surface but sometimes be deeper underneath.

It could also be a simple graze from rough play, a scratch that was mistaken for a bite, or a small puncture that has started to irritate the surrounding skin.

Less commonly, a wound that seems minor can hide swelling, trapped dirt or early infection, which is why gentle monitoring matters.

What To Do

Wash your hands first, then gently clean the area with plain lukewarm saline or clean water if you have it. Pat dry carefully rather than rubbing.

Stop your dog licking the wound if you can, since licking can irritate it and make it harder to judge what’s happening.

Keep the area calm and avoid bathing, rough play or muddy walks until you’ve seen that it’s staying settled.

Take a quick photo now, then again later if you’re monitoring it. That makes it easier to spot swelling or spreading redness.

If the skin opens wider, starts to ooze, becomes more painful, or your dog seems unwell, arrange veterinary advice promptly.

When To Contact A Vet

Contact your vet if the wound is puncture-like, if it’s on the face, neck, chest or near a joint, or if there’s swelling, discharge, heat, pain or increasing redness. Bite wounds can sometimes look minor while a deeper problem is developing underneath.

It’s also sensible to call your vet if your dog is off colour, not eating normally, or if the wound is not clearly improving within 24 to 48 hours.
